MNL48 (read as M.N.L. Forty-eight) is a Filipino idol girl group based in Manila, Philippines. They were founded in 2018 and are AKB48’s fourth overseas sister group, following Thailand’s BNK48, China’s former SNH48, and Indonesia’s JKT48. The group is named after the Philippines’ capital city of Manila. The only sister group of AKB48 that made its debut with exactly 48 members on its First Generation was MNL48. Live auditions on the noontime show It’s Showtime were used to select members of the first generation. They formed the current three teams on May 2, 2018 which namingly are Team MII, Team NIV, and Team L. There are 45 members of the group as of May 2021.
Those who have departed the group are referred to as “graduates,” and they occasionally receive a special graduation presentation or concert. A member may also be fired, dismissed, or resign in certain circumstances.
Shekinah Arzaga, a First Generation Center from Team MII, took over as overall captain of MNL48 on March 17, 2021, succeeding Alice Margarita De Leon. There are 28 official members of MNL48. At their MNL48 Christmas Performance on December 15, 2022, they stated that the teams would be disbanded and that they would instead divide into generations.
