P-POP meets Advocacy: A UP Fair Tuesday experience

The thriving P-POP Community meets advocacy as a crowd-filled UP Fair Tuesday: POP Rising gave color to the barren lands of UP Sunken Garden last February 13, 2024.

Statued in the area are a variety of booths, ranging from food to apparel, to services, as well as theme park rides and fiesta games, resembling the old-school fairs we enjoyed in childhood.

The event kicked off with a showcase of talent from budding musicians Johnny Tries To, New Alexandria, Dez and Del, and Magiliw Street. Their original songs ranging from POP to Folk are worth spots on our music playlists.

The second set was jam-packed with unwavering energy from SB Town artists – YGIG starting off their set with ‘BB’, former The Voice Kids Season 1 contestant Darlene Vibares performing her debut solo single ‘Daydream’, and PLUUS with ‘Shining Star’.

Soloists Maki and Zild provided an array of mellow to heavy synth music, both charming their target crowd, mentioning “UP” in their songs ‘Saan?’ and ‘Kyusi’, respectively.

Astonishing the audience with their powerful vocals and dance maneuvers were KAIA as they performed with a new intro dance for ‘Blah blah’, AJAA with their youthful aura for ‘Hany’, and VXON proving they are the “Monsters of PPOP” with their dark and daring songs ‘SSP’ and ‘KNT’. As a prelude to more set of performers, Kween Yasmin enthralled the viewers as co-host with her wit and comedic gestures.

By almost midnight, PPOP’s “Pinuno” PABLO enchanted the stage with his enigmatic first track, ‘La Luna’, together with his brother Josue for their newest songs ‘Determinado’ and ‘Akala’. Josh Cullen unleashed his vampire-like charisma next with ‘Get Right’, Sofa Remix with his cousin Camille Santos, also known as Carrot Mayor and Wild Tonight. Just when we thought the set is over, Josh returned on stage and sang ‘Get Right’ remix with Yuri Dope.

The fun continued with the last set of songs from 1st.One, who performed their Billboard Hot Trending song ‘Shoutout’, and “Female Alphas” G22, both greeting everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day in between their spiels. Closing off the fair are “Nation’s Girl Group” BINI, who performed a quick chorus part of their trending song ‘Pantropiko’, and ALAMAT, who withstood the drizzle and welcomed their third anniversary.

Aside from the good music, speakers in between segments from different sectors made the event more meaningful. It was bliss realizing the crafts we enjoy birth from quality education, something worth fighting for and raising awareness about.

Personally, as a first-time goer and a P-POP enthusiast myself, it was indeed a nostalgic and humbling experience. With the artists standing up and performing their share of art while voicing out the need for accessible and quality education, the festivity lived up to its theme’s name- POP surely rose that day.
